Goal deploy on Facebook “Your Algorithm,” a feature that allows users to specify in their own words which topics they want to see more of in their news feeds and reels. Thanks to artificial intelligence, the social network promises to adapt its recommendations in real time to expressed preferences, giving users a more direct way to influence the content offered to them.

Facebook your algorithm

An algorithm that you can guide with your own words

The new “Your algorithm” functionality offers a space dedicated to interest management. To access it, simply open the three-dot menu associated with a post in Facebook News Feed or Reels. Users can then indicate the topics they want to see more frequently or, conversely, those they prefer to see less frequently. Meta introduces this new feature as a way to make recommendations more personal and easier to adjust.

The social network also enriches the “Interested” and “Not interested” options. After this choice, Facebook can ask additional questions to more precisely understand what the user likes or dislikes. Then you can explain in natural language what you want to see more or less frequently. According to Meta, recommendations evolve in real time, even during the same browsing session.

This development is based in particular on the increased use of large language models (LLM). Until now, Facebook already deduced interests from numerous signals, such as posts liked or commented on and videos viewed. Meta explains that artificial intelligence now makes it possible to better interpret explicitly formulated preferences taking into account the context and the expressed intention. These indications complement the behavioral signals already used by the classification system.

The goal is to make the recommender system more responsive to changing desires. A user who temporarily wants to discover more recipes, travel or sports content can thus report it directly, without waiting for their interactions to influence the suggestions. Meta, however, does not specify the exact weight of these new indications in the final ranking of publications. Therefore, the algorithm continues to select content: the user has additional levers, without completely controlling their feed.

A function already tested on Instagram

Facebook thus joins other metaplatforms that are experimenting with more direct ways to personalize recommendations. Instagram already offers “Your Algorithm,” while Threads has a comparable feature called “Dear Something.” The arrival of this tool on Facebook extends this approach to one of the group’s main content feeds. However, Meta did not detail in its announcement the availability schedule for each country or each language: therefore, the rollout may vary depending on the accounts.
