Since Facebook decided to invest billions in the metaverseThis word is on everyone’s lips today. It must be said that the concept is truly exciting and revolutionary, and promises a future even more virtual and connected than ever before. Discover everything you need to know about the metaverse.
A fictional virtual world
When he announced his enormous ambitions regarding the metaverseFacebook (now Meta) presented the concept as an interconnected digital world in which users can “live” and interact through immersive 3D experiences. And all this in real time!
In short, the metaverse allows you to evolve as an avatar in a virtual universe where a multitude of public or private spaces await you. Whether for entertainment, work, or even learning, the metaverse is intended to be a world unto itself where you can do anything (or almost anything), especially as the technological equipment to do so is becoming more and more sophisticated.

To access the metaverse, you will probably need to download an app and equip yourself with a virtual reality headset or augmented reality glasses. The device will allow users to immerse themselves in a huge 3D scenario.
Additionally, controllers like those offered with the HTC Vive will likely be needed to interact with the virtual environment.
And finally, to get around, there is currently a treadmill system where the user straps on a harness and walks in place. In addition, in 2020 we were also able to see a prototype of footwear that allows you to slide on a surface without physically moving.
The concept is not new
Before Facebook promoted it, many people didn’t really know about the Metaverse. And yet the concept is not new! The term and idea are first mentioned in a science fiction novel published in 1992: The virtual samurai (Snow Crash) by Neal Stephenson.
In the story, the metaverse (or metaverse) is presented as a fictional virtual world in which the protagonist obtains the knowledge necessary to counter the villain’s Machiavellian plans.
Many other media have since explored the concept, notably films such as The Matrix (1999) and Ready Player One (2018). Not forgetting video games like Fortnite, which allow players to attend virtual concerts, for example!
It’s not just Facebook that has big plans for the metaverse. We can even say that the company is lagging behind the competition. In fact, since the coronavirus pandemic, many other giants are already on the scene: we have already told you about Fortnite, which regularly pampers its hundreds of millions of players around the world. And this is just the beginning, because Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games (the company behind Fortnite), has announced huge investments to transform the game into a real virtual world.
Other giants, such as Microsoft, also have all the cards in their hands (knowledge, infrastructure, technologies, etc.) to establish themselves in the world of the metaverse. A world that promises to be ruthless, as the concept begins to interest people. To be continued!
