Did you expect it? Well, here it comes! Euro-Office, the European and open source office suite, will soon have its own office application on Windows, Linux and macOS.

Nextcloud just announced it and expects it to be available for download in the coming weeks. There’s no specific release date yet, but at least now we know the wait is coming to an end.

Euro-Office finally comes to our computers

Since its launch last June, Euro-Office was not an office suite that could simply be downloaded and installed on your computer like Microsoft Office or LibreOffice. To use it with Nextcloud Office, you had to have a Nextcloud instance and use the browser to open and modify your documents.

With this office application, Euro-Office will become much closer to a classic office suite. You’ll be able to launch the software directly from your computer to open and edit your documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, using the fonts and settings available on your machine.

You can also save your files directly to your computer or save them to your Nextcloud server. In the latter case, you will still be able to work with multiple people on the same document, even if some people use the desktop app and others use their browser.

A launch planned for the coming weeks.

When it comes to our computers, Euro-Office will cover the three main operating systems. The application will be available on Windows and Linux, both x64 and ARM64 machines. In macOS, only the ARM64 version is announced at the moment, which means that it will be reserved for Macs equipped with an Apple Silicon chip.

You will have to wait a little longer before you can download it. Nextcloud does not yet give a precise release date. The company simply says that the apps will be available for download in the coming weeks.

Euro-Office is based on ONLYOFFICE

A quick reminder for those who haven’t followed the story from the beginning. Behind Euro-Office we find several European players such as Nextcloud, IONOS, Tuta, Open-Xchange, OpenProject and even XWiki. Everyone participates in the project with the same ambition: to offer a European and open source alternative to Microsoft Office and, in the process, reduce our dependence on the solutions of the American giants.

However, the Euro-Office was not developed entirely from scratch. The office suite is based on ONLYOFFICE open source code, used by its creators to develop their own solution under the AGPLv3 license.

And Onlyoffice didn’t like it very much. A few days after the Euro-Office announcement, the company accused the project of not respecting certain obligations linked to its license and its brand. It had even suspended its partnership with Nextcloud, which had lasted since 2018.

Since then, Euro-Office has continued to develop and now an office application is about to see the light of day. It remains to be seen if this new step will make Onlyoffice react again. At the moment, the company has not yet said anything publicly about this announcement.
