Microsoft announces Xbox Labs, an experimental team tasked with exploring new ways to run video games on devices for which they were not designed. In focus: porting old games to web browsers with the help of emerging technologies and potentially artificial intelligence.

Xbox Labs

In a message posted todayAsha Sharma, the head of Xbox, presents this new structure as a small group that brings together developers, engineers and scientists. Its goal will be to transform technological experiments into accessible tools and experiences for players and creators. Microsoft plans to publicly share its work and the tools developed through the research.

Xbox Labs will be particularly interested in decompiling and recompilation of games. These techniques allow you to analyze the operation of the software and then reconstruct its code to make it work in a different environment. Recent projects have made it possible to port PC games to Apple Macs equipped with Apple Silicon chips or run them in a browser using WebAssembly and WebGPU. In particular, there were GTA 5 playable from a browser, although Rockstar Games has not approved the project.

In particular, the initiative could help make older games accessible on more devices, without systematically relying on their original hardware. Experiments that allow you to mix elements from various games, such as integrating skate mechanics into Obligations or the execution of Halo in a browser. Xbox Labs, however, has not announced any supported games, tools available for download, or rollout schedule.

Artificial intelligence in the background

Asha Sharma’s post never explicitly mentions artificial intelligence. However, the manager establishes a parallel with AI agents capable of writing, executing and testing code, considering that game development has similar characteristics. This puts Xbox Labs in the context of AI tools that make it easy to decompile, port, and modify existing games.

This openness does not mean that Microsoft will authorize all proposed modifications. Asha Sharma reminds that Xbox intends to remain responsible for its intellectual property and the communities associated with its games. Therefore, the limits that the company will impose on future Xbox Labs tools remain to be clarified.
