Reddit announces a major change: You’ll soon need to have an account and log in to view the site. Posted by Steve Huffman (spez)Reddit boss, during the presentation of the quarterly financial results, this development will first be tested in certain countries outside the United States. Reddit aims to better protect its data, strengthen its advertising model, and respond to declining search engine traffic.

The end of Reddit without an account
Until now, Reddit allowed you to read discussions and subreddits without creating an account, a feature that made it a resource accessible from Google or other search engines. This opening will progressively give way to an experience reserved for connected users. Steve Huffman confirmed that the first tests will begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 in countries outside the United States. A specific timeline for a global rollout has not yet been communicated.
The exact scope of the restriction remains to be clarified: Reddit has not yet explained what an Internet user who opens a link without being logged in will see or whether all content will be affected in the same way. The change could complicate, in particular, sharing conversations with loved ones who do not have an account, as well as the occasional consultation of testimonials, technical tips or answers found through a search engine like Google.
Artificial intelligence and scraping in the viewer
Reddit also justifies this decision by protecting its immense discussion base. The platform claims that most unauthorized access to your data occurs through offline browsing. This content is of particular interest to AI companies that can exploit human conversations to develop or improve their models. However, Reddit will continue to enter into licensing agreements with certain players, including Google and OpenAI, contractually regulating the use of its data.

The platform also seeks to limit scraping, that is, the automated collection of content on a large scale. Reddit has already taken legal action against several companies that it accuses of collecting its data without authorization. The connection requirement should make certain access difficult and give the company greater control over consulting its content. However, this does not mean that any automated collection will be impossible.
A decrease in search engine traffic.
This announcement comes as Reddit sees a drop in traffic generated by search engines. According to Steve Huffman, the number of visits from Google and other platforms has decreased by more than one million per week on average during October 2026. Web traffic and offline views are particularly affected. The increase in AI-generated responses in search engines could contribute to this evolution, although the figures reported by Reddit do not allow the entire drop to be attributed to this cause alone.
For Reddit, connected users already represent more than 80% of the platform’s daily monetization. In particular, they allow for more precise advertising targeting and better content personalization. Steve Huffman says the company doesn’t need to know each user’s real identity: it just wants them to log in. Reddit also plans to reinstate a private browsing mode in its app to offer another way to check out the service.
The change marks a turning point for a site that has long allowed people to freely navigate its communities. Now it remains to be seen how Reddit will define the limits of this new policy and whether the tests will lead to a widespread restriction of accountless access.
