If you were waiting for Windows 12 to turn the page on Windows 11, you may be disappointed! After years of criticism regarding performance, bugs and even features imposed on users, Microsoft finally seems to have woken up to the problems and revised its priorities. In recent months the company has increased its announcements and improvements to try to improve the image of its system.
And it is clear that Microsoft has no intention of stopping there. Instead of releasing Windows 12 in 2027, the company would prefer to continue improving its current system. According to information from Tom Warren, journalist for The edgeA major update for Windows 11 is already in the works: version 27H2.
Windows 11 27H2: a much more important update than the previous ones
According to information from The edgeWindows 11 27H2 would not be a simple annual update like the ones Microsoft has been offering for two years. This time, the company would plan to modify an important part of the operating system, just as it did with Windows 11 24H2 in 2024.
As a reminder, versions 25H2 and 26H2 are based on the same technical foundation as 24H2. New features are usually added via monthly updates and then activated via a small activation package (enablement package or eKB) when you upgrade to the next version.
With Windows 11 27H2 it would be different. Microsoft is reportedly preparing an actual system update, replacing or updating several components under the hood. The goal would be, in particular, to continue the efforts made in recent months to improve the performance, stability and reliability of Windows 11.
But whoever says significant changes, says more evidence. Therefore, Microsoft could start offering the first versions of 27H2 to members of the Windows Insider program earlier than usual, to give them more time to test them.
For now, Microsoft has not yet officially confirmed Windows 11 27H2 and we also do not know the precise new features that will accompany this update.
And when will Windows 12 arrive?
Well, we don’t know. In 2022, our colleagues from Windows Center reported that Microsoft was considering returning to a three-year pace for major Windows developments. At the time, some expected Windows 12 to arrive in 2024. Finally, Windows 11 24H2 was released.
By 2027, some expected to see the successor to Windows 11 again. But if Tom Warren’s information is confirmed, history could well repeat itself.
This does not mean that Windows 12 will never see the light of day. Simply put, Microsoft has never officially announced this system, much less communicated a release date.
But really, is the name so important? Personally, I don’t care much if Microsoft keeps Windows 11 or moves to Windows 12. The company could even decide to call it “Windows” forever, I wouldn’t care. For me what matters above all is having an efficient, stable and reliable system.
And you, what do you think? Would you rather see Microsoft continue improving Windows 11 or move on to Windows 12 to permanently move on?
