Jon Watts will direct the next Star Wars film developed by Lucasfilm, with Simon Kinberg writing the script. The project consists of launching a new trilogy set after the Skywalker saga. But according to The Hollywood ReporterDisney (owner of Lucasfilm) has not yet given the green light, although the project is very advanced.
Simon Kinberg has been working on this new Star Wars trilogy for several years. Lucasfilm announced in 2024 that the writer-producer would develop three films, but the studio later questioned the idea that these episodes would directly expand the story of Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and their loved ones. However, new leaks suggest that the first film in the new trilogy will take place after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Simon Kinberg has been a screenwriter for several films, including X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Fantastic Four (2015), X-Men: Apocalypse or even X-Men: Dark Phoenix. He is also one of the creators of the animated series. Star Wars Rebels.

Jon Watts’ arrival comes as Lucasfilm also reshuffles its creative direction. Dave Filoni now heads the studio with Lynwen Brennan as co-president, following the departure of Kathleen Kennedy as president of Lucasfilm in January.
