Super Bowl LXI will receive a fully animated version in the Star Wars universe on February 14, 2027. Called Star Wars Funday Football, this parallel broadcast will reproduce every action of the game in real time with avatars, settings and characters taken from the galaxy imagined by George Lucas. Disney, ESPN and the NFL make this the first alternate animated presentation for a Super Bowl.

Star Wars Superbowl

The match will be repeated in the Star Wars galaxy.

It will not be an illustrated summary or a simple dressing added around the television images. The movements of the players and the ball will become animation as the game progresses. The athletes present on the field will thus become digital characters, while certain sequences will incorporate Star Wars substitutions and different nods to the saga.

C-3PO will accompany the evening with the voice of Anthony Daniels, who has played the droid since the original 1977 film. Other characters will be announced later. The production also promises special sequences between the actions, which should help maintain the pace of the show when the game is interrupted.

The system follows the principle of the previous editions of Funday Football dedicated to Toy Story, The Simpsons and Monsters & Co. This time, the scale changes significantly: the Super Bowl is the most watched sporting event in the United States and the broadcast will be offered on more than 155 markets.

Sports data transformed into instant animation

The feat is based on data from NFL Next Gen Stats and Sony’s Hawk-Eye optical tracking cameras. Beyond Sports, also owned by Sony, combines this information to reconstruct players’ positions, movements and ball trajectory in a three-dimensional environment. Therefore, the animation remains linked to the real development of the meeting, although it adopts a completely different staging.

This type of broadcast imposes a particular difficulty: the data must be processed in a very short time and then converted into credible movements for dozens of avatars. Contacts, changes of direction and groupings of players are much more complex to reproduce than a simple dot moving on a map. The production will also have to manage the unforeseen actions typical of American football without having an animation prepared beforehand.

Disney specifies that this version will not replace traditional broadcasting. It constitutes another entry point, intended in particular for families and spectators more attracted by Star Wars than by the tactical subtleties of the game. The experience will be broadcast live on Disney+ and the ESPN app, as well as Disney Channel and Disney XD in the United States.

Availability adapted to time zones

The live broadcast will begin at 6:30 pm US Eastern Timethat is, after midnight in mainland France. Disney, however, has announced that it will be available on demand in several territories, including France, once the broadcast ends. Precise terms and conditions may vary depending on local markets and laws.

Star Wars Funday Football will arrive during the year of the saga’s 50th anniversary. A few days after the game, the restored original film will return to theaters starting February 19, 2027. This reissue will also accompany the arrival of Star Wars: Starfighter, which will be presented in IMAX 70 mm in 2027.

There official presentation of Disney+ It does not yet specify the participating teams, which will naturally depend on the results of the NFL season. Additional Star Wars characters, commentators, and visual details will be announced closer to the Super Bowl.
